This paper focuses on the seismic vulnerability assessment of two existing port buildings located in Livorno (Italy): a former railway station bombed and reconstructed after WWII, and a historical building ("Palazzo Rosciano,, )built during the 17th century and refurbished in the nineties. Both of them show various problems, such as cracks and settlements. The process started with the inspection and the collection of all the available documents. Then, a detailed geometric survey has been carried out through the use of a laser scanner. At the same time, in order to define the mechanical properties of materials, a set of investigations and tests have been performed by using thermographic camera, sclerometer, pachometer, flat jacks, shove test, and penetrometer. In addition, the two buildings have been subjected to Ambient Vibration Tests (AVT) to determine their dynamic characteristics such as natural frequencies and mode shapes. Measurements were made using 3 to 5 wireless Force Balance Accelerometers (FBA) in a series of different configurations, which involved simultaneous vibration readings in three principal directions. According to the Operational Modal Analysis (OMA), the Frequency Domain Decomposition (FDD) has been used. The modal parameters were difficult to be identified due to the severe ambient noise around the harbor area; for this reason, once the cause has been detected, it was needed to apply a signal processing filter.

Abstract
The modal parameters were difficult to be identified due to the severe ambient noise around the harbor area; for this reason, once the cause has been detected, it was needed to apply a signal processing filter.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
