Starting from the analysis of narratives, participant observation of guided tours and the examination of the discourses they produce, the article discusses the ways and the related critical issues of the process of incorporating territorial stigma into the tourism industry in Naples. While the tourist history of Naples has always been intertwined with stigmatizing narratives, for some neighbourhoods in the historic centre and urban peripheries, territorial stigma has been and is the actual driver of the tourist industry. The article questions the critical issues related to the processes of aestheticization and commodification of this stigma and the nuances of the connection between it and tourism.

Abstract

Starting from the analysis of narratives, participant observation of guided tours and the examination of the discourses they produce, the article discusses the ways and the related critical issues of the process of incorporating territorial stigma into the tourism industry in Naples. While the tourist history of Naples has always been intertwined with stigmatizing narratives, for some neighbourhoods in the historic centre and urban peripheries, territorial stigma has been and is the actual driver of the tourist industry. The article questions the critical issues related to the processes of aestheticization and commodification of this stigma and the nuances of the connection between it and tourism.
