Roman Amphitheaters Between Critical Issues and Potential Uses. A Project for the Ludic Building of Trier

Amphitheaters stand as living testaments to Roman civilization, characterized by materials, techniques, and architectural systems that vary greatly depending on the different territorial contexts in which they are located. Currently, these archaeological assets struggle to dialogue with the contemporary landscape and the needs of modernity; in particular, the latter, if not carefully evaluated, endanger their formal and material integrity, also compromising their value as memory. Through a careful study of these ancient structures, it is possible to adopt the most appropriate strategies for their protection, thus guaranteeing sustainable measures for their valorization. The Trier Amphitheater in Germany is one of the most emblematic cases in the transalpine territories and plays a leading role in the list of the city’s cultural sites. After numerous restoration operations, starting from the nineteenth century, the structure has undergone various phases of reuse and abandonment, recently becoming a setting for cultural events and shows. The critical issues encountered for the current use of these structures materialize in this specific case, showing, however, how possible choices, even while respecting the cultural value of the monument, can meet the needs of contemporaneity. After an analysis of the main problems related to ancient ludic structures, the contribution highlights the potential both for conscious use and for historical testimony of the amphitheater of Augusta Treverorum. Therefore, the proposed conservation and valorization project for the Trier amphitheater attempts to apply, in a methodologically correct manner, a conservative approach aimed at safeguarding the site and its compatible use. This is to remind the community of the importance of archaeological heritage and to remind administrations and conservation bodies of the memorial values that amphitheaters represent, from which to start to govern the entire territory, proposing the construction of a quality cultural model.
