Still today, the Venice Charter remains a crucial moment of guidance and dialogue about restoration, able to keep international communities in comparison. In light of this, the contribution investigates which heritage categories the Charter's residual theoretical framework still seems applicable (the Historic Sites?). It also attempts to define the aspects that have not been represented inside the Charter due to the progress of the debate about heritage, which has seen a shift from 'exceptional monumental sites' to the broader field of widespread built heritage. Within this framework, the culture of conservation extends the horizon of restoration, motivating and availing itself of the acquisitions related to material culture, with a great sensibility towards trace preservation, supported by nondestructive testing techniques, archaeometry and ethnological and anthropological influences. The examination takes as reference successive salient moments that expressly referred to the Charter.
