In 2001, the Fondazione Compagnia of San Paolo of Turin promoted a preliminary investigation to carry out a systematic survey of 32 churches in the historic center of Turin, aimed at defining the priority of the conservation and preservation works and scheduling them in the following years the interventions. Today, twenty years later, the 1563 Foundation for Art and Culture of the Compagnia of San Paolo has launched a new project, Churches in the historic center of Turin: ChiesTO. This initiative, starting from the results of the survey carried out in 2001, proposed to realize an updating and comparison work through the analysis of the documentary and material sources that bear witness to the study, conservation, and maintenance activities carried out in these 20 years, marked by Olympic Games of 2006 and by two other expositions of the Holy Shroud, but also by the consequences of the financial crisis. In the summer of 2022, a working group started the research activity in the historical and cur-rent archives of the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the metropolitan city of Turin, in the Cultural Heritage Office of the Diocese, as well as examining of the practices relating to the buildings under study, kept in the archives of the Compagnia of San Paolo. The proj-ect presented has set as its objectives a technical update of what has been done in the twenty years indicated, open to socio-economic and socio-political evaluations that take into account, for example, the temporal and economic dynamics of the interventions, the impact in scientific and cultural terms, the involvement of stakeholders and research institutions, dissemination and capitalization of the work. According to this logic, extreme importance has been given to the managers of the assets, with particular reference to new forms of ecclesial life and social aggregation, to the maintenance policies launched by public bodies, and to the guiding role assumed by banking foundations towards new valorization.
