To regulate the stratification of forms within the urban space, consolidated approaches in the literature propose to move toward a taxonomy concerning the physical elements of the built environment. In this article, the systems of classification of the built environment by architectural elements are presented as a tool to allow the understanding of the relation between urban rules and their effects on the urban space form and its uses. Two elements, ‘roof’ and ‘window’, in the Turin case study, are presented. Such examples show different approaches to reorganize and simplify existing rules. The results obtained on the ‘roof’ and ‘window’ elements show how this method can be used to transform the rules from an ex-post control tool into an ex-ante planning tool.

Abstract
To regulate the stratification of forms within the urban space, consolidated approaches in the literature propose to move toward a taxonomy concerning the physical elements of the built environment. In this article, the systems of classification of the built environment by architectural elements are presented as a tool to allow the understanding of the relation between urban rules and their effects on the urban space form and its uses. Two elements, ‘roof’ and ‘window’, in the Turin case study, are presented. Such examples show different approaches to reorganize and simplify existing rules. The results obtained on the ‘roof’ and ‘window’ elements show how this method can be used to transform the rules from an ex-post control tool into an ex-ante planning tool.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
