Different temporary housing types were adopted during the recovery phase after the post-earthquake on 23 November 1980 in Irpinia and Basilicata: from one-piece containers to prefabricated, light and heavy solutions. The short decision-making periods and the site location of these temporary settlements had long-term implications, affecting the entire idea of material and community reconstruction of the damaged historical centres. Fortytwo years after the seism, comparing three significant cases (Caposele, Conza della Campania, Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi) and citing the survivors' memories, the following essay aims to investigate the consequences and legacies of the temporariness in Irpinia. The permanence of the provisional weaves together the crises and contemporary debates on the depopulation of the inner areas in the southern Apennines, outlining the effective life cycle of the second emergency and the alternative uses in its current persistence.
