The paper is an introductory chapter focusing on the conceptualization of ‘’adaptation’’ in the field of urban history. It includes a critical reflection on recent studies and debates related on, and presents the output of the international and interdisciplinary Brainstorming Workshop organised by the author for the establishment of the congress issues. It highlights some relevant critical aspects of current challenges in urban history.
