Historically, the engineering courses tend to emphasize the purely technical aspects, reinforcing in students the idea of the duality between technology and society. Appropriate Technologies (ATs), being designed starting from the needs of specific communities, can vice versa help students understand their future role in terms of environmental sustainability and social justice. The paper describes the experience of teaching ATs with the Applied Mechanics approach at the Politecnico di Torino.
