Late Gothic in Avignon: the palaces of Giuliano Della Rovere in the 15th century Cardinal Giuliano della Rovere has ordered the renovation of the Palace of the Popes and the Petit Palais in Avignon, as well as taking care of the family palace in Savona, in the last decades of the fifteenth century. The bishop’s palace of Avignon during its 15th century renovation is a case of great interest for understanding the evolution of late Gothic architecture in the noble palaces, in the context of a peculiar city, as the seat of the papal court in the 14th century, and with a very delicate political situation in the second half of the 15th century. All aspects that deserved specific consideration from the two patrons, in their role as bishops of the city, Alain de Coëtivy and Giuliano Della Rovere. The two phases of the construction site show common choices, the intention to enlarge and embellish the building as a symbol of an acquired role, but declined with different architectural solutions. Della Rovere, in fact, decided to update the architecture of the building, giving it more regularity, but maintaining the original local Gothic architecture.
