Concerning the structural retrofit of reinforced concrete existing buildings, the in-depth structural analysis is of fundamental importance to perform an effective project planning. Such high-level of analysis can be achieved through an appropriate survey of the construction and an extensive characterization of materials. However, the acquisition of these data could be often unfeasible and usually expensive. This is the case of either the fast-seismic vulnerability assessment (for which, tests on structural materials are generally not provided), or the feasibility study that occurs during the preliminary design stage. Consequently, a new procedure is introduced to estimate the mechanical proprieties of existing materials. It is based on some relationships between concrete strength and age of construction, which in turn are obtained by using the database stored at Politecnico di Torino. The latter covers almost 100 years of tests performed on samples made of concrete and steel. The strength-for-age curves are herein compared with the properties of materials measured on concrete cores extracted from a series of existing school buildings in the province of Torino.
