Abstract

The village of Cancia, close to Cortina d'Ampezzo (Italian Dolomites), is hit by destructive debris-flows for a long time, a storage basin delimited by natural and gabion barriers was built in 2000 as temporary mitigation structure, while waiting for a permanent structure. In 2009 a severe event caused the partial collapse of the gabion barriers and the consequent Death of two people in a downstream located house. The present paer analyses through numerical modelling if there was a role of abandoned building in the defining the flow dynamics and main trajectory and which was the storage basin effectiveness and retention capacity. Obtained results underline that an adequate and rational design of mitigation structures against rapid flow-like landslides, like debris-flows, is fundamental to guarantee risk reduction.
