The essay analyzes the reuse of industrial buildings for a new productive use that characterizes the contemporary city. Consequently to a transformation of the logic of production, the reuse of industrial spaces takes on the potential for developing a resilient local economy linked to the territory, together with a new definition of urban regeneration processes. The paper analyses the definition of reuse, through a historical context directed to scan the practices that have changed the way we treat industrial buildings: illegal occupation processes that established new relations between working and social spaces. The case study of the Greenpoint Manufacturing and Design Center is presented for its important role in the definition of a new strategic plan for industrial development in the city of New York and as support for small and medium-sized firms in the Brooklyn neighborhood.
