The aim of this paper is to present a comparative study of different acquisition methods tailored to the GPS L5, with the particular focus to test their robustness to the presence of phase and amplitude scintillations in the propagation environment. The study exploits real GNSS signal affected by significant phase and amplitude scintillation effects, collected at the South African Antarctic research base SANAE IV and Brazilian Centro de Radioastronomia e Astrofísica Mackenzie (CRAAM) monitoring station. Since ionospheric perturbations are frequency-dependent, the results achieved for the GPS L5 signal are also benchmarked to the impact at the carrier frequencies GPS L1. Exploiting the complex signal structure of GPS L5, four different L5 acquisition schemes, proposed in the literature, were implemented and their performance have been discussed and analyzed. This paper compares the different metrics of the acquisition methods, namely, the statistical characterization of the detection process by considering the probabilities of detection/false alarm, the computation of the peak-to-noise-floor ratios for the acquired signal, and the measurement of the acquisition time duration. Performance are assessed exploiting a fully software GNSS receiver.
