We discuss the geophysical characterization and monitoring of leachate circulation within the waste mass of a municipal waste landfill. Electrical resistivity of waste mainly depends on moisture content and salinity, and temperature. We applied electrical resistivity tomography, both from the surface and in several boreholes to detect the main distribution of moisture within the waste. Results demonstrated the reliability of the suggested approach to detect from a qualitative point of view the main volume affected by the leachate circulation. A quantitative interpretation in terms of changes of moisture induced by leachate infiltration and effects on biogas production remains challenging.

Abstract
We discuss the geophysical characterization and monitoring of leachate circulation within the waste mass of a municipal waste landfill. Electrical resistivity of waste mainly depends on moisture content and salinity, and temperature. We applied electrical resistivity tomography, both from the surface and in several boreholes to detect the main distribution of moisture within the waste. Results demonstrated the reliability of the suggested approach to detect from a qualitative point of view the main volume affected by the leachate circulation. A quantitative interpretation in terms of changes of moisture induced by leachate infiltration and effects on biogas production remains challenging.Pubblicazioni consigliate
