R ECENTLY, THE EVOLUTION OF TilE TECHNIQUES OF SURVEY AND MODELING IIAVE ENABLED VERY REALISTIC 3D MODELS TO BE ELABORATED. TUIS HAS LED TO TWO DIFFERENT MAIN USES OF THIS 3D MODEL- FOR THE PRESENT AND THE FUTURE: 3D MODELS CAN REPRESENT THE PRESENT STATE OF ART/CONDITION OF THINGS IN THE BUILT HERITAGE, USEFUL FOR PREPARING 2D DOCUMENTS ( i.E. PLANS, SECTIONS AND FACADES) USED IN TRADITIONAL SURVEYS; AND 3D I IYPER-REAL!STIC 3D DIGITAL MODELS SUPPORT AND ORIENT PLANNING CHOICES FOR THE FUTURE. TUE CURRENTLY USED B UILDTNG INFORMATION MODEL (B!M) SYSTEM ALLOWS FOR THE DECOMPOSITION OF TliE MODEL INTO ITS COMPONENT PARTS. B IM DESCRIBES THE MECUANICAL, STRUCTURAL AND MATERIAL FEATURES OF A BUILDING AS WELL AS THE TEMPORAL DIMENSION -THE SOCALLED IV DIMENSION. THE IV DIMENSION IS PARTICULARLY USEFUL IN A RESTORATION PROJECT WHERE THE HISTORICAL STRATIGRAPHY OF A BUILDING NEEDS TO BE RECONSTRUCTED. THIS STUDY PRESENTS OF THE STATE OF THE ART OF THE MODERN TECHNIQUES OF 3D REPRESENTATION OF THE CULTURAL HERITAGE AND THE POTENTIAL OF TI-lE BUILDING INFORMATION MODEL (B IM) USING THE TEST CASE OF A BLOCK OF THE "QUATTRO CANTON( ' IN TliE AQUILA CITY CENTER. WITHIN TillS CONTEXT, BIM IS PROPOSED TO GUIDE THE CliOICES OF THE INTERVENTIONS IN TliE BUILT UERITAGE AND TO IMPROVE TilE MANAGEMENT OF THE RESTORATION PROJECT IN TERMS OF TIME, ORGANIZATION AND ECONOMY.
