Replacement of polymers from petrochemicals by bio-based polymers for the manufacture of textile fibers is a possible way to improve the sustainable development for the textile industry. Polyamide 11 (PA11) is one of available bio-based polymers. Since about five years, PA11 presents various applications in textile area. In order to increase the number of applications for this polymer, its fire behavior need to be improved. An intumescent formulation may be incorporated during the melt spinning process. In order to reach the maximum bio-based content in the end used material, low sulfonate kraft lignin from wood wastes was selected as carbon source. PA11 with lignin and two kinds of phosphinate (aluminium AlPi and zinc ZnPi) were prepared by melt extrusion, and then hot-pressed into sheets. Before to be spun, thermal properties (TGA) and fire reaction (UL-94) were characterized on the different composites. The mechanical properties of the obtained yarns were sufficient to carry out some fabrics. The fire properties of these fabrics were studied by cone calorimeter.
