The aim of this work is to show how the energetic refurbishment of an historic building can be improved through the LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) of materials. The main advantage of this approach is the possibility to be less impacting from the environmental point of view compared to the same project conceived without this analysis. LCA in the field of historical buildings has been applied to the project of a refurbishment of the church of San Vito alla Rivera (L'Aquila , Italy), dating from the XIV century, severely damaged during the earthquake that hit Abruzzo in 2009. The study is focused to determine which of the possible materials to be used in the reconstruction has the least impact, and to assess energy demand. Analytical methods have been applied in situ in order to know the thermophysical properties of the materials and to evaluate the energy consumption of the building. Data have been utilized to determine the impact of an intervention of restoration. In particular, the optimal solution for the material to be used to insulate the roof has been individuated by application of LCA and energy modeling.
