A periodic structure of circular “mushroom”-like geometry within the unit cell, positioned between two metal planes inhomogeneously filled by different dielectrics is considered. Within the unit cell, the circular patch is connected to one of the planes by four vias and also loaded with metal cylinders (posts) to broaden the width and reduce the lower limit of the first electromagnetic band-gap, characteristics that are essential, for example, to parallel-plate noise suppression. The parametric studies performed by full-wave electromagnetic simulation provide for the variation of the number of posts as well for the geometric and material parameters of the structure.
