The problem of non-destructively detecting delamination in laminated composite plates is addressed in this article. As the presence of a delamination causes a discontinuity in the first derivative of the mode shapes, a numerical method for detecting discontinuities in smooth piecewise functions and their derivatives, based on a polynomial-annihilation technique, has been proposed and applied to the problem of damage detection and localisation in plate-like structures for which only post-damage mode shapes are available. Mode shapes of the test structure can be obtained by measuring the dynamic response on a regular grid of points on the surface of the plate. In this study, numerical simulations have been performed using the FE method of the dynamic behaviour of orthotropic multilayered composite plates with delaminations; two cases have been analysed in which the delamination considered is between different layers of the composite plate. Results indicate that further development of the technique for non-destructive testing of composite structures would be highly worthwhile.

Abstract
Results indicate that further development of the technique for non-destructive testing of composite structures would be highly worthwhile.Pubblicazioni consigliate
