In consideration of well known disciplinary approaches (which have achieved remarkable scientific results) colour and decoration constitute a “complex system”, from the physiological perception of the real and/or the imaginary to the cultural dimension, as a filter in the analysis of the constitutive trials of architecture, city, landscape. As a preliminary experimental verification, the following paper will provide two possible examples from Turin reality, comparing two opposites: the color and the ornatus in the Art Nouveau architecture; the role of color in treatment centers. Focusing on the colour aesthetical and social implications, the examples show how its use or misuse can influence the quality of the environment and therefore the quality of life.
