In this paper we present our research activity on structural crack monitoring networks based on very low cost POF sensors. First we briefly review the low cost fiber based sensing techniques for strain sensors and give a general description on how we organized the measurement set-up. Then we focus on the sensor we developed to monitor cracks, giving preliminary examples of applications.
