In recent years, administrators, planners and decision makers have become more and more interested in techniques and methods for reliable evaluation of areas that can be involved in the propagation of recognized potential instabilities, such as rock avalanches. In the present paper, numerical techniques currently available for modeling runout of rock avalanches are presented and some examples of their application are given. Advantages of continuum mechanics modeling are emphasized both from a theoretical point of view and through the description and the application of new numerical codes, such as RASH3D.

Abstract

In recent years, administrators, planners and decision makers have become more and more interested in techniques and methods for reliable evaluation of areas that can be involved in the propagation of recognized potential instabilities, such as rock avalanches. In the present paper, numerical techniques currently available for modeling runout of rock avalanches are presented and some examples of their application are given. Advantages of continuum mechanics modeling are emphasized both from a theoretical point of view and through the description and the application of new numerical codes, such as RASH3D.
