Noise pollution from transport activities is one of the most endemic problems in modern societies. However it cannot typically be treated in an effective way within a single research field. The proposed approach is based on an original methodology where different territorial contexts, conflicting socio-economic instances and discipline-specific solutions are systematically categorized to achieve a formal classification scheme (taxonomy). This is the backbone of an integrated database capable of interfacing measurement and epidemiological surveys with noise abatement solutions. The tool proposed to obtain effective solutions to reduce noise is innovative, a holistic checklist, presenting the important solution selection criteria from the awareness, physical, psychological, social, and communication assessment domains that should be helpful when selecting the solutions to reduce the noise. The starting point is the typology of problem encountered and the relative effects produced on people in term of degree of disturbance on: awareness status; physical status; psychological status; social status; communication status, taking into account also the different age layers and the gender. In this way, it is possible to evaluate and select disparate solutions within a common framework, in order to scientifically select a set of best practices across different disciplines, socio-economic contexts and policy objectives.
