The paper consists in two parts: the first is about the effects of vegetation on microclimate in urban areas. Experimental data in different contexts case studies- are analysed in order to define strategies for cooling. The second part deal with a plant data base which the authors are elaborating to aid designers in the selection and use of plants. This data base provides information on the ecological, functional, morphological characteristics of trees and shrubs.
