Data compression algorithms are widely employed to reduce the amount of data in order to save storage space and to speed-up the data transfer. Lossy algorithms provides high compression ratio but are designed to provide good results mainly when multimedia data are processed. Aim of this paper is to analyze the behavior of commercial lossy and lossless algorithms in the presence of measurement data. The paper also describes a lossy algorithm that has been designed to provide high compression ratios with a known uncertainty level.

Abstract
Data compression algorithms are widely employed to reduce the amount of data in order to save storage space and to speed-up the data transfer. Lossy algorithms provides high compression ratio but are designed to provide good results mainly when multimedia data are processed. Aim of this paper is to analyze the behavior of commercial lossy and lossless algorithms in the presence of measurement data. The paper also describes a lossy algorithm that has been designed to provide high compression ratios with a known uncertainty level.Pubblicazioni consigliate
