The paper reports on the influence of porosity and metallurgical defects due to casting on the fatigue behaviour of a ductile iron (EN-GJS-700-2, EN 1563). Fatigue tests were conducted on 40 specimens obtained from machining of bars linked to the casting model. In the bars, casting defects tend to concentrate. X-ray examination, conducted prior to tensile and fatigue testing, allowed for a classification of specimens in two classes (porous and non porous). Few specimens were also scanned through Computed Tomography to gain a more detailed analysis of the porosity level and distribution. Such non-destructive techniques failed to identify metallurgical defects, later observed on the fracture surface, which caused a significant reduction in the specimen fatigue resistance.
