Damage to buildings and impairment of the slope stability is often feared when a tunnel has to be excavated by drilling and blasting undersmall rock cover: that typically occurs in urban tunnells and is a problem met by all tunnels in the portal area, irrespective of the location. After a review of the information available on the subject in the current literature, the case of a road tunnel excavated in Northern Italy is examined. Data recorded and measures taken to avoid damage are exposed and discussed, and some rules to be applied to similar cases are drawn from the case.

Abstract
Damage to buildings and impairment of the slope stability is often feared when a tunnel has to be excavated by drilling and blasting undersmall rock cover: that typically occurs in urban tunnells and is a problem met by all tunnels in the portal area, irrespective of the location. After a review of the information available on the subject in the current literature, the case of a road tunnel excavated in Northern Italy is examined. Data recorded and measures taken to avoid damage are exposed and discussed, and some rules to be applied to similar cases are drawn from the case.Pubblicazioni consigliate
