Recent neighbourhood planning models, such as Low Traffic Neighbourhoods, Superblocks, and the 20-Minute Neighbourhood aim to enhance urban liveability by prioritizing walkability, accessibility, and public space over car-centric infrastructures. However, these approaches also pose socio-spatial challenges, including gentrification, inequitable access, and resistance from local communities. This special issue critically examines the complexities of these models, addressing issues of mobility justice, demographic equity, and participatory urban planning. Through diverse case studies, it highlights the need for socially inclusive, context-sensitive strategies to ensure that sustainability efforts foster equitable and resilient urban environments.
