La cattedrale di un vescovo teatino: il nuovo duomo di Rovigo (1695-1721)

This paper focuses on the events that led to the construction of the new cathedral of Rovigo starting in 1696. Archival evidence calls into question the attribution of this building to Girolamo Frigimelica Roberti and shows instead its close relationship with the Theatine church of Ferrara. The connection needs to be fully understood by re-examining the fundamental role of the theatine main financier, Carlo Labia, who was the bishop at the time of the construction. His death, ten years before the church was completed, caused the rejection of the initial Theatine model. The only evidence of the early cathedral’s project today stands in the drawings and in the stone.
