During fetal life, mesenchymal stromal/stem cells (MSCs) surround glomeruli and tubules and con-tributetothe developmentoftherenal interstitiumbysecretionofgrowth factors that drive nephron differentiation. In the adult, an MSC-like population has been demonstrated in different compartments of human and murine nephrons. After injury, these cells might provide support for kidney regeneration by recapitulating the role they have in embryonic life. In this short review, we discuss the evidence of anMSC presence within the adult kidney and their potential contribution to the turnover of renal cells and injury repair.

Abstract
During fetal life, mesenchymal stromal/stem cells (MSCs) surround glomeruli and tubules and con-tributetothe developmentoftherenal interstitiumbysecretionofgrowth factors that drive nephron differentiation. In the adult, an MSC-like population has been demonstrated in different compartments of human and murine nephrons. After injury, these cells might provide support for kidney regeneration by recapitulating the role they have in embryonic life. In this short review, we discuss the evidence of anMSC presence within the adult kidney and their potential contribution to the turnover of renal cells and injury repair.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
