The accumulation of plastics poses a serious threat to marine ecosystems, with fishing gear contributing significantly to ocean plastic pollution (about 640000 t/year). Efforts are underway to develop circular economy solutions for reusing and recycling marine plastics. In this context, the SUSTAINED project aimed to develop novel composite materials derived from recycled polyamide 6 (PA6) fishing nets loaded with lignocellulosic (B) and rice husk (RH) biochars. The composites obtained through melt extrusion (fillers’ loadings up to 15 wt.%) exhibited enhanced thermal and mechanical behavior; besides, both biochars showed lower densities compared to traditional inert fillers like talc and carbonates, making the designed composites suitable for lightweight applications.

Abstract
The accumulation of plastics poses a serious threat to marine ecosystems, with fishing gear contributing significantly to ocean plastic pollution (about 640000 t/year). Efforts are underway to develop circular economy solutions for reusing and recycling marine plastics. In this context, the SUSTAINED project aimed to develop novel composite materials derived from recycled polyamide 6 (PA6) fishing nets loaded with lignocellulosic (B) and rice husk (RH) biochars. The composites obtained through melt extrusion (fillers’ loadings up to 15 wt.%) exhibited enhanced thermal and mechanical behavior; besides, both biochars showed lower densities compared to traditional inert fillers like talc and carbonates, making the designed composites suitable for lightweight applications.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
