The concept of the Commons as a fundamental requirement for democracy dates back to ancient Greece and has been the core of social and economic debate over the centuries. In 1968 Garrett Hardin proposed his theory about the tragedy of the Commons to which Elinor Ostrom answered with a vision of alternative economic models to solve the tragedy, based on cooperation and education. Many other scientists explained the crucial role of knowledge for the common good, a concept that today is strictly linked to sustainable development and goals of the Agenda 2030. Libraries have an important role and responsibility in helping to shape a sustainable society for the common good. The article discusses the positioning of libraries in this scenario.

The article discusses the positioning of libraries in this scenario.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
