The paper deals with the Venetian debate on the new building code approved in 1901 and the influence of Ruskin’s ideas on it. Several personalities in Venice cultural circles, the Ruskin’s successors, militated against the brusque modern transformation of the Venetian cityscape due for example, to the introduction of cast-iron architectural elements on the facades of the ancient buildings. The new building code was so conceived as a new tool for protecting the beauty of the city, the so called “urban aesthetics”.
