Italian motorways were built since 1921 and they include many engineering structures subjected to decay and aging over time. Among these, tunnels are currently being inspected and rehabilitated using a systematic approach described in the tunnels inspection manual [1]. The aim of this paper is to describe an example of the assessment stage and of the repair works performed for the Scampitella tunnel, an Italian motorway tunnel located on the A16 motorway in the Avellino province. This tunnel was characterised by many defects and voids in the shallow portions of the concrete lining, in addition to the presence of cracks and the non-compliance of the minimum vertical clearance in some sections. The repair works, whose phases are here described, consisted of the partial or integral demolition and rebuilding of the tunnel crown and, in some sections, of the springlines as well.
