Abstract

For two centuries and more, before the current trans- fer to the Molinette area, the Hospital of San Giovanni Battista e della Città maintained its social and sanitary function in its historic location within the “città nova”, in the East direction. Its construction was an operation strongly desired by Carlo Emanuele II, but which will bear the signature of Maria Giovanna Battista of Savoy- Nemours, who will request the project to Amedeo di Castellamonte, a figure linked to the ducal family and present in the building sites of the main Savoy’s project. The building was intended for “public comfort”, and despite its function, gave relevant prestige to the city and to the Duchess, also for composition choice such as the portal, the atrium and the monumental staircase. The present study is focused on these three volumes, starting with the important role of architectural survey in historical-architectural analyzes, and intending to highlight its potential in recognizing and analyzing the phases that affect the factory, and to point up, at the same time, the main morphological characters. It is a discipline that can provide numerous results and that can fulfill the needs of architectural scholars as well as of professionals engaged in the study of heritage, and which may also increase the attention on issues as documentation and use (also distant use), of the monumental heritage.
