This paper introduces an original hybrid truss system made of steel and glued laminated bamboo (glubam). Specifically, the considered spatial truss structure consists of steel elements with a hollow cross-section at the lower chord and glubam beams for upper chord and diagonal bars. First, the main physical/mechanical properties of the glubam and steel used in the prototype structure are introduced. Next, it is analyzed the behavior of the hybrid structure under static and dynamic loads. In particular, the static behavior is examined by applying a uniformly distributed load on the structure to assess its capacity and failure mechanisms. The dynamic response under ambient vibrations and the free-decay response of this truss structure have been recorded and analyzed in order to estimate frequencies, vibration modes and damping ratios. An archetype of this special truss structure system was successfully designed and constructed for a rain-shed canopy of an office building in China. The experimental results of this study are intended to provide practical guidance for the analysis and design of steel-glubam hybrid systems under static and dynamic loads.
