In 2019 the Jewel opened at Singapore Changi Airport. A spectacular fragment of tropical forested landscape, encapsulated in a glass and steel dome, it is the latest addition to a surprising collection of lush garden-like settings scattered throughout the island’s airport. Designed to enhance the character of Changi as an exclusive destination for both travelers and local residents, green spaces such as the Jewel are enticing attractions that contribute to the construction of a perfect landscape of consumption, where nature acts as a catalyst for a more captivating shopping, dining, traveling and waiting experience. The article offers a design critic of the green spaces scattered through Singapore Changi Airport, highlighting their role in the long-established narrative of Singapore's post-colonial identity based on the lush tropical forested landscape.
