Abstract

The landscape structure composed by the complex of castles – and not by one castle – of Montjovet is a recognized garrison point in the context of the Valley of Aosta cross-border system characterized by the two bulwarks of Montjovet and Verrès. The dominant position of “Mongiveto” (as Olgiati calls it) is the main structure. This is the so-called castle of Saint-Germain, more ancient in foundation, but object of heavy and recognizable reshaping during the XIII century. The castle is an important structure both militarily and functionally only if placed in connection with the behind Chenal castle (XIII-XIV century). The system, designed by Alfredo d’Andrade, director of the Regional Office for the Conservation of Monuments of Piedmont, Liguria and Valle d’Aosta, is the object of a rich correspondence on protection and restoration, largely unpublished, studied with an interdisciplinary approach.
