A pilot-scale study was carried out in order to validate the promising results, obtained at a lab scale, concerning the thermo-alkali pretreatment of WAS before anaerobic digestion (AD). A semi-continuous mesophilic anaerobic digester (300 L) and a thermo-alkali pre-treatment reactor (35 L) were on-purposely developed and used. The performance of sludge anaerobic digestion (AD) with a thermo-alkaline pretreatment (90°C, 1.5h, 4g NaOH/100g TS) was assessed in term of biogas and methane production, and TS and VS removal. The sludge used in the study was collected from the largest Italian Wastewater Treatment Plant located in Castiglione Torinese (with a treatment capacity of more than 2,300,000 p.e). The effect of the pretratment was an increase in biogas and methane production by 76% and 89%, respectively. After anaerobic digestion (AD) TS and VS removal efficiencies reached respectively 48 and 51%. The average specific methane production (SMP) of treated WAS, after a semicontinuous anaerobic digestion, with a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 20 days, was equal to 0.227 Nm3/kg VSfed. The results of the pilot-scale study pointed out that a thermo-alkaline treatment is effective and potentially applicable to the full scale WWTPs sludge line.
