The article discusses the large increase in spaces for the reception of refugees and asylum seekers detectable in European cities, with particular attention to Turin in the second decade of 2000. Despite this, the article notes that urban planning seems to struggle to cope to the spatialization of these phenomena, as it historically was when the presence of new populations in cities was particularly relevant. It also notes how current conditions raise a completely different story from the past, yet, just as it was in the past, contemporary migrations are meanwhile totally changing the way people live in cities. Starting from a survey conducted on reception spaces for refugees and asylum seekers in the city of Turin, the objective of the article is to encourage, through the detection of some recurring elements, a debate on possible design actions aimed at rethinking spaces for reception in relation to the existing city.
