The article discusses the symbolic role of gardens as expressions of cultural and social diversity. Focusing on gardens designed during colonialism by European powers in their colonies and analyses Chinese-style gardens promoted by Chinese immigrant communities from the second half of the twentieth century in a variety of geographical contexts distant from China, the articles examines garden design in the construction of strategies of representation and self-affirmation.
