The thesis deals with important topics as the disaster impacts triggered by climate change in the coastal cities of the developing world and their respective emergency planning and adaptation. The increasing human pressure on the coasts, the increasing frequency of floods they are affected by and the attention by major multilateral organizations highlights the relevance of the theme. The thesis presents the actual level of knowledge about this subject, starting with the definition of the key words and ending with the main methodologies in use. Subsequently, after a detailed analysis, three studies have been developed and presented. For the first two cases, located in Maputo (Mozambique) and Guayaquil (Ecuador), the methodology that has been illustrated is a risk analysis that uses maps to locate areas prone to flooding with their extent and estimates the number of inhabitants. In the third case, a Tabarre Port-au-Prince (Haiti), the other methodology manages the territory and its resources in the event of a natural disaster. Through the collection of important information (returned in a server mapping) and vulnerability analysis, it shows the major difficulties related to the management of the territory of Tabarre. After developing the detailed analysis of the three case, the latest chapter compares 22 planning instruments (strategies, guidelines, adaptation and contingency plans) adopted for most of the cities around the world. The conclusions provide some recommendations about future steps that might be taken by the planning in this complex area.
