The aim of this study is to provide elements for the comparison between rail and air connections, related to travel times between metropolitan areas. On a European level both rail and air networks are represented and an analysis has been conducted considering planned improvements on the European railway network. Based on the cities defined, indicators have been calculated aiming at establishing the threshold of convenience for rail transport and air.
