Electromagnetic dampers are a promising alternative to the conventional hydraulic automotive shock absorbers, but the inertia of the electromagnetic transducer (usually a rotative electric motor) can influence deeply their performance. The aim of the present paper is to show that their behaviour can be assimilated, from this viewpoint, to an inerter similar to that introduced in 2008 by McLaren in Formula 1 racing and referred to as J-damper.

Abstract
Electromagnetic dampers are a promising alternative to the conventional hydraulic automotive shock absorbers, but the inertia of the electromagnetic transducer (usually a rotative electric motor) can influence deeply their performance. The aim of the present paper is to show that their behaviour can be assimilated, from this viewpoint, to an inerter similar to that introduced in 2008 by McLaren in Formula 1 racing and referred to as J-damper.Pubblicazioni consigliate
