Production of small gauge copper wire by multipass drawing still offers room for improvements, mainly in terms of defect prevention and control. Description of the plastic deformation process and related phenomena helps to map safe operating conditions. Further work on process induced damage throws additional light on the issue, thanks to improved numerical simulation and better understanding of defect growth mechanism. Some aspects of a numerical and experimental investigation on small gauge copper wire drawing process are presented, and results are reviewed which point out some ways to improve product quality by better selection of process parameters.
