This study concerns the assessment of the long-term hazards associated both with fission and future fusion reactors, namely: • intrusion in a fusion waste disposal site. This analysis was performed in the frame of the SEAFP-2 studies of the European Fusion Technology Programme. • intrusion in a fusion waste disposal site. In this case, data are taken from typical European waste disposal sites. • long-term migration of radioactive nuclides due to natural waste package degradation, for both fission and fusion reactor cases. In all relevant cases, evaluation of associated risks is carried out. A comparison of the obtained results permits to state that: • intrusion is by far the most relevant source of public risk for radioactive waste disposal; • fusion shows lower values of radiological hazard compared to that of fission; • the evaluated risks are well below the acceptable risk limits and in good agreement with the results of other studies.
