Integrating the Adriatic Ionian Region into the European Union is a complex and multi-dimensional process characterized by significant socio-economic and political transformation. Central to this process is the concept of Europeanisa-tion, which entails the adoption of EU norms, values, ways of doing, and stan-dards by countries. This study explores the role of cross-border cooperation in Euro-peanisation and integration of the Adriatic Ionian Region. Cross-border cooperation initiatives, supported by EU funding and policy frameworks, aim to foster regional stability, economic development, and good governance by promoting collaboration across national borders. Through joint projects in infrastructure development, envi-ronmental protection, cultural exchange, and public services, cross-border coopera-tion endeavours to address shared challenges and leverage collective opportunities. This chapter examines the role of cross-border cooperation on the WB’s path to EU integration, highlighting how these cooperative efforts enhance institutional capac-ities, build trust among neighbouring communities, and align local practices with EU standards. The case-study-based analysis reveals that while significant obstacles remain-such as political fragmentation, varying administrative capacities, and histor-ical tensions—cross-border cooperation has made notable contributions to regional cohesion and the Europeanisation process. Finally, this study underscores the impor-tance of sustained and strategic cross-border cooperation initiatives in overcoming peripheral disadvantages and advancing the WB’s integration into the EU framework.
