The contribution examines the possible English translations of the Italian adjective operante (operative and operational) in relation to the work of Saverio Muratori and Gianfranco Caniggia. Starting from their studies of Rome, Venice and Como, it distinguishes Muratori’s predominantly deductive and philosophical framework from Caniggia’s more inductive and practice-oriented development of processual typology.
