A “public walkway” at the Citadel, between city and architecture

The paper discusses the area around the so called Mastio of the Citadel, in Torino, from the mid eighteenth century and the end of the nineteenth century. Analyzing in depth the area around the filibertina fortress, in the eighteenth century drawing, the large avenues and the bastions of the fortifications, the paper discusses the relationship with the urban design of the city in region of the third expansion around Porta Susina, that interesting the capital city of the Savoy kingdom in the direction of France at the begging of the eighteenth century. Based on the critical examination of the relationship with the military spaces, a link with the so called Citta' vecchia, and with the civilian blocks, the paper considers the planning of the secondo half of the nineteenth century, after the "Piano di Ingrandimento della Capitale", signed by Carlo Promis, in 1851 - 1852. At the end of the century, the restoration of the preserved Mastio offers the opportunity to find a identify for an area between the new Diagonale Pietro Micca and the Porta Susa railway station, residences and gardens connected by tree-lined streets, enjoyed by the new bourgeois society.
